𝙳𝚎𝚙𝚕𝚘𝚢𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝙳𝚒𝚊𝚛𝚢 - 𝙳𝚊𝚢 𝟷𝟽𝟼 𝚘𝚏 𝟷𝟾𝟾

In less than two weeks, Lord willing, we will welcome John home! I’ve been brainstorming and scouring the internet for “welcome home” poster ideas. I think my favourite so far might be: “‘Love is patient…’ (I Cor. 13:4) But 188 days is long enough!”

It’s been helpful lately, in the final stretch of this wait, to have the distraction of Christmas preparations. The kids and I have done way more decorating, movie watching, and baking than we would normally do by this point in Advent.

The other day on a drive to town we were discussing a Blue Christmas service being advertised by a church, and the kids wondered what that was. They had never heard of such a thing. So I explained how Christmas can be a really sad time for some people, especially those who have lost a loved one and are facing the season, with all its traditions, without them.

A few days later, one of the kids said to me, “I think I understand now what you mean about Christmas being really hard for some people. I mean, we’ll get Daddy back before Christmas, and I’m still feeling sad that he’s not here to do all these things with us.”

This kid was right. Hanging Daddy’s handmade ornaments on the tree just wasn’t the same without him here. Listening to a bit of Handel’s Messiah each morning during breakfast isn’t the same without him. He loves the Messiah! Watching Christmas movies isn’t the same without him here to laugh at Charlie Brown’s mishaps or Mr. Bean’s antics. Our annual trip to the thrift store for the kids to pick out presents for each other wasn’t the same without his help. We usually take turns helping them choose something for Mom and Dad as well, as everybody tries to keep what’s in their carts a secret. It’s a lot for one parent to juggle…

I’ve been feeling inexplicably a little heavy an

I’ve been feeling inexplicably a little heavy and sad the past few days. I kept asking myself why but no answer came. Today I looked at the calendar and saw that tomorrow is December 1st. For some reason, that flooded me with a strange sort of relief. It was a clue that unlocked the mystery of my recent emotions. November holds some difficult memories for me of dark valleys I’ve traversed. It’s been years, but even though these things don’t consciously bother me anymore, I think somewhere under the surface, my body and heart still remember, still grieve, still stumble a few steps in the dark.

Now that the mystery is solved, I am taking a few moments today to let those emotions emerge, to float to the surface so they can be skimmed away gently by the grace of Jesus, the love of the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Tomorrow is December 1st — a new day, a new month, the symbol of yet another new beginning.

If the holidays conjure a strange mix of emotions for you this year, don’t ignore that. Don’t let it frustrate you. Be curious about it. Be compassionate with yourself. There may be things you remember, things your body remembers, that seem like no big deal at a conscious level. If your emotions begin to disrupt the peace of the season, set aside some time to sit in the stillness of a Trinity hug. Let God’s grace, love, and fellowship embrace you.

Sometimes we can get so focused on universals that we forget the tender, intimate nature of His coming. Give Jesus some time this year to remind you that He came close for YOU…to bring you the grace, love, and fellowship that heals every bit of your brokenness!

“Let the whole earth be silent.” What would that be like? Have you ever wondered what it would sound like if everything just stopped? Here in the early morning darkness, I’m the only one up in the house, sitting in what I think is silence. But that “silence” only makes the hum of the fridge, the thump of the dryer, and the plink of rain outside my window sound even louder. Maybe that’s because the aim of silence isn’t necessarily to eliminate every sound but to help us hear what really matters. Not that there’s anything profound about my household appliances or today’s weather. But little sounds become big in silent spaces. What if, in God’s presence, silence isn’t an end in itself? What if it’s meant to facilitate our listening…to His still, small voice? Speak, Lord, for Your child is listening.
