There is no need to dress our wounds or hide our s

There is no need to dress our wounds or hide our scars when we come to Jesus. Those points of deepest pain are powerful places of communion and transformation. As Flora Slosson Wuellner says in 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴, His wounds “were not wasted or swallowed up in glory” but became “sources of redemptive love. If we take those hands stretched out to us, our own wounds of body and spirit become to us no longer signs of hopeless pain but also sources of new springing love!”

Anyone else cross the finish line of another year rather sluggishly? It’s been two weeks of stuffing my body with way too much sugar, way too much everything!…and starving it of the regular exercise it’s accustomed to. How fast I gain those extra few pounds…and lose the perfect fit of my favourite jeans in the process! It’s a rather uncomfortable and discouraging way to step into a new year. And I’m sure it fuels the frenzy of fitness-related resolutions we’ll be seeing in our feeds. You know…the impossibly strict intentions we set for ourselves that only make us feel worse when we can’t live up to them. I can easily end up at enmity with my physical body. The above quote was a much-needed reminder for me this morning, as I woke up to a new day, a new year. I love the idea of body as “icon.” It has much to teach me, and I want my care of it to be fuelled by compassion, not comparison or criticism.

“I will meet my goal” — Jesus’ resolve to go on healing and to reach Jerusalem is on full display in Luke 13:32. The Pharisees are trying to deter Him with news of Herod’s death threats, but He presses on, driven by compassion for a people who “were not willing” to be gathered under His care (Luke 13:34).

What grace that He is willing…even in those times we are not. Love was the way He chose to reach an unwilling people! Let’s meditate afresh on His sacrifice for us, allowing it to touch our deepest springs of desire and turn our hearts back to Him, with the same ardour with which He has opened His heart to us.
