Harshness is not in keeping with the authority God

Harshness is not in keeping with the authority God gives! For many, the word “authority” reaches their ears with a lot of baggage in tow. They’ve witnessed firsthand the harm done by those that, like Simon the sorcerer, have sought such authority for personal gain (Acts 8:19). Perhaps it’s helpful to remind ourselves of these three things when we encounter this Greek word “exousia”:

1. It has a fuller meaning than what might spring to mind when we hear the word “authority.” Depending on context, it can also be translated as ability, privilege, freedom, influence, right, competency. In John 1:12, exousia is the “right” God gives us to be called His children when we receive Jesus and believe in His name (John 1:12). What a gift!
2. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:18 that ALL exousia, every speck of it, in heaven and on earth belongs to Him. Again, this underscores the aspect of gift in any exousia we wield.
3. Paul understood that exousia is received as a gift from the Lord. He also understood that it is given with a specific purpose in mind — for building up, NOT for tearing down.

Parents, pastors, people with any measure of influence or power, let’s remember where it comes from and what it’s meant for!

I’m curious, when you have used this expression or heard it used, what was the context of the conversation? What was the point the person was trying to make? I’m not really asking whether or not you believe it to be true. Every pithy saying has its pitfalls. I’m just wondering what you think is at the heart of this contrast.
